Make Your Corner Dining Nook A Unique Space That Reflects Your Style

Turning your living room into a multipurpose room is a good way to make use of limited space. You may have a separate dining room and decide to turn it into an office cum playroom making it a more usable and family friendly space. Creating a corner dining nook in your living room can achieved without too much interference with its original purpose.

A nook is defined as “A small corner, alcove, or recess, especially one in a large room”. Designing and creating the space does not have to be a laborious task or require the services of a professional. Put some thought into the project and you will be awarded with an area on which you have placed your own personal stamp. What follows are some tips on how to go about turning a portion of your living area into a desirable space for everyday dining and hosting dinner parties.

The first step would be to decide what area you could dedicate for this purpose. This will depend on what furniture you have in your room now and how they can be re-positioned to create space for dining. A single person starting out on their own may need only a small area for say four, whilst a couple could decide that entertaining is important and they would like to create a space large enough to seat larger number of people. So some give and take will be in order when making a final decision.

Your next decision is to consider what furniture you would prefer to use and whether you can use your existing furniture and only buy a minimal number of additional pieces. Bear in mind that you would be wise to compliment the living room furniture. As a minimum, you will need a table and chairs.

However, if you have a more eclectic spirit you could use other items in a creative manner. Visiting recycling yards could present you with a variety of options. An old church pew can be refurbished and with the addition of a padded seat cushion can be used as seating. If you come across a good quality wooden door with some character, it can be turned into a table that will last you a lifetime. On the other hand, you could simply opt to buy a more modern dinette set if you have a more minimalist style.

A third aspect that will help you perfect your space is defining the actual area. A room divider of some kind can be the way to solve this. You may decide to place two pieces of furniture such as an entertainment centre facing the living area and a dresser facing the dining area. Matching bookshelves with well-placed books and some plants can serve this purpose. An L-shaped sofa set can also be simple and effective as a dividing option.

Here again some creativity can also serve you well. Use a folding screen with soft fabric or hang a curtain made of sheer fabric to create a division. A modern twist can be achieved by using strands of strung things such as transparent beads, cut metal shapes or even small squares of mirrors. Another option is to position the furniture on a large surface rug, which will define the space.

The choice to use existing or new furniture and choose a traditional, eclectic or minimalist style is up to you. Making the most of your available space for a dining nook will be a decision you will not regret and could make for many memorable meals.
